Compensation

Many of our activities are related to greenhouse gas emission; weather in terms of heating or vacuuming at home or of travelling by plane, car or bus. Environmental-friendly means of transport like the railroad, a changeover to an eco-electricity provider or the installation of a new heating certainly offer great potential to lower CO2 emissions. Nevertheless, there will still be emissions which cannot be saved or left out and which contribute to climate change.
To minimize the damage to climate as much as possible, you can offset the inevitable emission of climate-damaging gases. This is where Klima-Kollekte starts: by using the CO2 calculator you can find out what emission of climate gases in the different fields of heating, electricity, mobility and paper consumption has been produced. You voluntarily pay the amount calculated for this. Enough, that greenhouse gases at a different place can be avoided.
The money will be invested for example in solar or biogas projects in India to save greenhouse gases there.

How does compensation work?

Compensation means: a certain amount of greenhouse gases is emitted in some place. But in a climate protection project somewhere else emissions with at least the same climate efficiency are avoided. In total, the greenhouse gas emissions worldwide stay the same – the gases emitted are “offset”.
The principle of compensation works because it does not matter for the climate itself where greenhouse gases are emitted or saved. The concentration of climate-efficient gases altogether in the atmosphere is decisive. That separates climate change from other more localized environmental problems like water or air pollution.
But: to offset occurring emissions contributes to climate protection, though it does not suffice. A massive reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions is necessary. Be part of it! Klima-Kollekte guaranties to use the amount you pay for your emissions’ compensation to offset the amount of CO2 within the scope of climate protection projects. Thanks to strict standards, the projects not only reduce the emission of greenhouse gases but they improve the local population’s quality of life and contribute to development on-site.

What can you do?

With our emission calculators you determine the amount of greenhouse gases which occur due to a flight. You pay a certain sum for the calculated emissions and Klima-Kollekte invests it in their partners’ climate protection projects. Provisions in terms of renewable energies or energy efficiency are realized and the amount of climate-efficient emissions saved.

What does the compensation of a ton of CO2 cost?

The price for the compensation of a ton of CO2 results from the costs created by the emission saving at a different place.
With the money you make available to Klima-Kollekte for the compensation we finance for example additional costs appearing when replacing fossil energy sources by renewable ones. The amount of costs and thus the price of a ton of CO2 depends on the project size, the technology used and the country in which the project is realized. For example, the saving of one ton of CO2 by building a biogas plant in India generates different costs than the introduction of energy-efficient stoves in South Africa. In general, big projects cost less per ton than small ones. So, the prices would be different depending on the project. But it would be too complicated to calculate a different price for each compensation payment. Therefore, Klima-Kollekte charges an average price of 23€ per ton including administrative expenses.
