Project types

Klima-Kollekte invests in carbon projects that promote energy efficiency or renewable energies. These carbon projects support climate protection as well as poverty reduction in their particular localities. So as an additional benefit, our projects always contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined by the United Nations.

Within the projects, climate protection and development cooperation are invisible linked, because our projects:

  • create better prospects for disadvantaged people in poor districts by supporting village start-ups,
  • strengthen women as small entrepreneurs in the village community,
  • promote health and save energy and time, and
  • support partner organizations in setting up social enterprises with a view to fostering financial self-sufficiency.

In addition to the criteria of the co-benefits for the population our projects are selected according to criteria like the dimension of a project and therefore the saved amount of emissions, the type of project (energy efficiency or renewable energies)and the geographic location.

Our projects meet Gold Standard requirement for certification. The Gold Standard is a quality standard for carbon projects which was developed by environmental and development experts with a view to ensuring that projects comply with the highest standard in connection with the “Clean Development Mechanism” (Certified Emissions Reductions - CER) and therefore with the regulated market. Since 2006, the Gold Standard has also existed in connection with voluntary offsetting (Voluntary Emission Reductions – VER).

At present, Klima-Kollekte is funding carbon projects in Cameroon, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Rwanda and Nicaragua. From 2014 - 2016 57.750 tons of carbon emissions have been offset through our projects with your financial support in total of 1.668.008 Euros.

Where do the certificates originate?

The certificates Klima-Kollekte uses for compensations cannot be purchased on the market but are brought in by the associates. They achieve the certificates by developing and realizing emission saving projects with partners on-site and/or by supporting their partner organizations financially in doing so. Here, Klima-Kollekte benefits from its connection with churches: Klima-Kollekte can use equal relations of many years with project partners in developing countries and emerging nations. At the moment, we are realizing projects in India, Nicaragua, Ruanda and Kenia (in preparation).

Certification and independent verification

Klima-Kollekte gets its climate protection projects certified and thus achieves the certificates (Certified Emissions Reductions – CER) and (Voluntary Emissions Reductions – VER).
All Klima-Kollekte projects with an annual CO2 reduction of over 5000 tons of CO2 are certified Gold Standard.
Projects with an annual CO2 reduction of less than 5000 tons of CO2 have to be developed according to Gold Standard. An external certifier verifies some of the projects at random.
A permanent certification would be uneconomical for micro projects with an annual saving of less than 5000 tons of CO2. Yet, to still have these reasonable projects related to development policy, Klima-Kollekte adds them to their portfolio. The project standards used (documentation, methodology, baseline etc.) also have to be in line with Gold Standard.

Criteria, Gold Standard and certification

Keeping strict standards when selecting and realizing a project guarantees that

  • projects actually contribute to climate protection
  • they are realized in addition to other efforts concerning climate protection
  • they have no negative effects on environment and development on-site and
  • they contribute to sustainable development and combating poverty

Therefore, the projects’ selection and realization occur according to the Gold Standard. It is a quality standard for CO2 compensation projects developed by environment and development experts. The Gold Standard takes into account the contribution to emission saving as well as to sustainable development. It guaranties, that projects within the scope of “Clean Development Mechanism” meet highest requirements.
Klima-Kollekte also guarantees that each emission avoiding certificate showing the respective amount of greenhouse gases saved is allocated only once and is then closed down.
